Study Shows "Stimulus" Protected Government Jobs while Destroying Private Ones

I may be suffering from confirmation bias, but this report showing that "the ARRA created/saved approximately 450 thousand state and local government jobs and destroyed/forestalled roughly one million private sector jobs" rings very true to me. Of course I doubt anyone could ever determine precisely what would happen in the absence of any particular government intervention in the economy, but we definitely know what it means in broad principle. This study fits that knowledge.

Rush Limbaugh has commented on this and says that the various TARPS and Stimulus packages constituted a means of keeping democrat-voting government union members employed and keeping their involuntary dues to the union (and thus to democratic causes) flowing. He called it money laundering for the democrats.

I think that democrats are just better at rent-seeking than republicans. Maybe it comes from all those years where they held the legislative reins and created their own institutional infrastructures to exploit them.

Yeah, that makes sense. But given that republicans haven't ever eliminated any of the alphabet agencies, nor talked about the principle of individual rights as guiding government, it's hard to get too excited about them even in economic matters (let alone religious ones).

I agree. I wasn't endorsing Republicans because I think they masquerade as limited gov't types (not individual rights types; I don't think they can rise to that conceptual level) while still doing as the democrats do, only on a smaller scale. Then when things go badly it is laid off on the limited govt philosophy and "crony capitalism."

I think it was Alan Simpson who said that if the Democrats put forth a plan to blow up the white house tomorrow, the Republicans would respond with one proposing that it be dismantled over 5 years. He labeled them "Democrat Lite." I'm not endorsing Simpson's ideology but I think that he has defined the Republican Establishment correctly even if in inexact terms.

If it weren't for the fact that Republicans always seem to bring criticism to capitalism, I'd prefer them in office to the Democrats. I'd rather have their incompetent corruption than the practiced corruption of the Democrats. But that is only a difference in degree and not a difference in kind.
