Government Destroying Science

I found this discussion by Donald Miller to be quite informative. It shows the pernicious effect of having science regulated via the grant system. (Caveats: in my opinion he doesn't go far enough with his proposed solutions, and he seems to be associated with Lew Rockwell which makes me hesitate to even link to him.)

Note, none of this should be new in terms of principle/philosophy to O'ist readers, but the specifics that are gone into are well worth reading in detail. Just to clarify my previous comment as it could be taken I thought the whole thing was a surprise. I found the specific examples of established-science vs. challenges to it to be particularly interesting (climate change issues I knew about of course, but I was not aware of any possibility of controversy on HIV/AIDS connection for example).

Hi Tim,

I had the same type of experience when I read it, even though I knew of several of the controversies. What struck me more was the grant process and how it, by its nature, embeds consensus thinking. In any case, learning the particulars about anything always makes it more "real" which is why I posted the article.
